However, the family also ends up meeting a lot of trouble on the prairie. They get extremely sick with “fever ‘n’ ague” which is a fever with severe chills and shaking, later revealed to be malaria. The family is cared for by Dr. Tan, an African American doctor, who helps the whole family back to health. The book also features the Osage tribe who owns land that the Ingall’s family lives on. Her mother has a prejudice against the Native Americans while Laura’s own feelings are more those of a child.
Other books in the series contain Laura Ingalls Wilder’s journal, her letters to Almanzo Wilder that she wrote when she traveled west to meet her daughter in San Francisco, and a collection of her previous writings. They start a new life together in their little house in South Dakota. Laura has changed from a pioneer girl to a pioneer wife, but her adventures continue. Published in 1941, Little Town on the Prairie is the seventh book in the series and also the seventh best-selling novel from the Little House series.

She is the second-oldest child out of Charles and Caroline’s five children. On the Other Side of the Hill continues their story as the young Wilder family struggles to overcome a series of natural disasters that beset their little farm. A small cyclone doesn’t cause much damage, nor does a fire, but the family realizes that things will be tight if they stay on the farm. The one wildcard in this series is Farmer Boy, as it is the only book in the series written from Almanzo’s point of view, based on when he was a young boy in New York, many years before he would later meet Laura.
