We have to figure out ways of applying AR to our everyday life that is not pure entertainment, or it will be just a fad that will go away when people get bored – and I think it’s not that hard. When I worked in the exhibition Agenda 2020 with OMSE Studio we had a concept for an AR dashboard on the wall with information that was updated in real-time; something only possible with the use of AR. We also had a poster that indicated the next departing train at the nearby station. This is just a glimpse of what AR allows regarding interactive print. We don’t need to replace paper with screens if we can just augment the printed artifacts using this technology.

This is actually a two-step process, but the first step is to simply experience AR and VR as a user. Expose yourself to the new technologies and devices as soon as possible—preferably before a project comes across your desk. Augment is an application that allows users to view 3D models in real time and on the right scale, transforming a plan into a 3D model hologram, or simulating life-size products. The platform is available for smartphones and tablets and is used by product designers, sales and marketing teams for reducing prototyping costs, increasing customer appeal and boosting sales. Adjusting to a tech-enabled future is something most of us are doing all the time, whether we or not we realize it. Through an AR experience, people could see blood coming out of their arm, directly affecting a sick person on a billboard. By placing a sticker on their arm and scanning it, people would see an AR overlay with a bandage, needle and tube through their phone. Blood would then flow down the tube and fill up a bag attached to a sick patient on a billboard. As the blood bag filled up, the sick patient would get better, illustrating the life-saving power of becoming a donor. AEI Consultants, a full service real estate consulting firm, was looking for ways to capture attendee attention at a high-value conference in Las Vegas. With Superside in their corner, they came up with the idea to mount scannable cards in the conference break room, a well-trafficked destination for their audience.

Previously, AR was confined mostly to deep-pocketed architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms that could spend hours integrating Revit models with homemade 3D-game-engine models. The technology has been democratized and is available on a per-project basis, which means that small firms and even sole proprietors can now take advantage of it to provide and present data in real time. AR is useful across nearly all parts of the design and construction process, through conceptualization, construction, and ongoing operations and maintenance. For years, we've had to tell stories on flat, 2D screens, but this is changing.

ARKi integrates tabletop models and full-scale 3D models into real-life environments, compatible with Revit and other programs. The app is one of the most robust AR design tools available, delivering dynamic animation of 3D models anchored to real space. Users can stretch or shrink buildings, pivot them around a point, and take them apart layer by layer in an exploded axonometric view. There’s a robust set of material textures on file and built-in shadow and light analysis functionality. It’s also more public-facing than many apps, so you can share models on social media or via email. GAMMA AR is a building site monitoring application that uses augmented reality technology to overlay BIM 3D buildings via smartphones or tablets.

What Goes Into Designing an AR Experience?

One example is Fologram, which allows users to create interactive models that guide step-by-step construction in real-world environments. A step toward mixed reality, Fologram can also use QR codes or arUco markers on small pieces of paper to manipulate models in space. For example, with wireframe models, these guides specify how to trace out the dimensions for molds to create building elements and where to place each brick in a wall with millimeter accuracy. AR is just one member of a growing family of extended reality (XR) visualization models. On the other end of the spectrum, virtual reality (VR) produces wholly synthetic, completely immersive digital environments with headsets and hand controllers. Mixed reality (MR) lies between the two and generally consists of AR environments that offer more interaction between simulated and real-world elements.

But building empathy for your development peers in the process starts with gaining at least a solid overview-level understanding of how it all comes together. UX Designers can take what we already know about design and tweak it to fit this new and exciting field. AR design has its unique features, but it's built on a solid UX design foundation.

It allows you to compare the reality of the work with the planning information contained in the project. GAMMA AR enables 3D BIM models to be viewed before and during the building process, creating an understanding of planning, avoiding errors, and reducing construction costs. Designing for AR requires different skills and considerations than traditional design. AR designers must focus on creating immersive experiences tailored to the user’s environment.
